Marina Lee (b. 2001) started her musical journey after falling in love with Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. She writes music that has many facets. Straddling the bridge of diatonicism and post-tonality, her works acknowledge various genres, time periods and geographical locations (particularly Russia, France and much of Asia). Marina mainly draws inspiration from folklore, military history and astronomy for all her musical art forms.
Currently pursuing a B.M. in Composition at the Juilliard School, Marina studies composition with Dr. Melinda Wagner and piano with Professor Jerome Lowenthal. Her work has been performed by a variety of ensembles around the world including France (Paris), Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg), Taiwan (Taipei), and the U.S. (New York City and Philadelphia). She has been selected as the recipient of numerous national awards, including the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO)’s Emerging Composers Competition, Tribeca New Music’s Young Composer Competition, the MTNA national composition competition, and the New York Music Competition for Young Artists. In 2020 Marina has been invited by the UN Chamber Music Society to arrange works of Puccini and Faure for its “75 YEARS OF LOVE” project in celebration of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary. She has also been commissioned by the American Guild of Organists (AGO), premiering her work written in collaboration with organist Elena Baquerizo, Helix Variations, in 2021. In 2022, she directed her one-act opera Maggie-Now, based on the novel of the same name by Betty Smith, as well as premiered Green Hill, White City for viola and organ. Most recently she is scheduled to perform her piano trio Star Light, Star Bright in October of 2022 and dance work Unwhispered in November 2022 by the Juilliard ChoreoComp collective.
